Thanks to everybody for the excellent drum presets - very useful and helpful.

Anybody want to take a crack at recreating this drum sound? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rTZ1Q7oMP6Y

Warning - it's Aerie Faerie Prog Rock and 7 mins long, but the drums are pretty much solo for the first minute or so. The snare I don't think is possible, as there is very little strainer sound. A truly great drum mix - especially if you crank it - and I would kill to be able to approximate it.

Any mixing hints would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers.

Here's an updated set of EJB presets from me. I basically went into the old set and cleaned them up. These are geared for classic to indie rock and not so much hard rock or metal. These also require BFD2.1 and the EJB extra content.

Hey all,

Here's one using the JSD Chad Smith kit... Enjoy!

:D

P.s. Cool Tip: Send a snares amb or room mic (via the KPI) to an aux setup in the mixer; compress it, gate it, eq it to taste and bring it back into the mix alongside the snare

Edit; I've added another preset, adding a reverb send off the room mic's - adjust to taste. And I've cleared up the unused tom channel in the previous version, as it was a mistake.

Additional: Setting the Rm Rev channel to mono will add a lot of weight to the drums. Try it :) ... You might want to adjust the level and perhaps EQ the low-end too IMHO.

Please re-download. And comment

Cheers 8)

....

Updated the JSD Chad Pop Rev preset in the first attachment with the cym's from the kit. Enjoy!

....

Uploaded another version with an added FX channel that I'd personally use for creative fills during a break section returning to a verse, or kicking into a chorus.

Notes: Automate the on/off switch of the individual effects on that channel, and solo the FX channel too (at the same time) as only the ambient mics and additional room reverb are sent there. You could also try adding a delay after this in your DAW, and mess with the drive control to add more grit.

P.s. As the ambient's are sent direct to the Fill Fx channel rather than via a send, don't mute this track! I did it this way to save automating many a send on/off to achieve the same result. Hope that makes sense...???

Please comment!

Ashley, for some reason no cymbals loaded (no crash1, crash2, or ride) with your presets. No big deal, I just added the Chad cymbals.

Anyway, I love that reverb sound you came up with and I think it works great in small doses. I never thought to just send the room channel to a verb, but I've been playing with that after downloading your preset and I'm digging it a lot. I hope you don't mind me stealing that (and your preset :P ), it's a cool trick.

I started out with your preset and made a more direct and more kick (vs. snare) heavy version of your preset. Hope you don't mind me posting it...

Hey Funky,

Cheers for the comments. I find adding a reverb to the room or ambient mics better in some cases than sticking one just on the snare to create space, everyone should try it 8)

I updated the "Rev" preset to include Chad's cym's in context so make sure you grab that - I updated the post to mention that too.

I'll check out your preset and comment.

Best,

Ash :D

Hey All,

Though I would lose my preset posting virginity with a preset utilising XFL. This is the Tama StarClassic kit (I think) with a few bells and whistles. A couple of FX sends for weird (but probably not practical) filter FX and a bit of the Ambience mic mixed in and pitched down for extra fatness. See what you think. Also hope i copied the right file :)

Here's another I've just whipped up. It's a ref to Def Leppard's Hysteria... well supposed to be, but needs a simmons tom or other sample under the snare and mixed a tad more in a DAW or on console with other instruments. I'll have to try it out with the kits included in Zero-G Nostalgia and report back - http://www.hollowsun.com/vintage/sds5/

The kit could do with the rest of the toms, more cyms and a ride IMHO. I'll re-edit when I'm free.

EJB and AFJ required.

Enjoy!

Ash :D

P.s. Won't forget to comment on the pre's above, just too busy atm. Sorry.

Edit; Few quick notes: The PSP Vintage Warmer will give you a lot more gain on your snares without clipping, so you can really push your comp. And, notice how the "R Rev" channel (the room mic channel sent to an aux with a reverb on) adds that studio air ;) - check out the routings.

Hey all,

Here's another for you. I really like this one, it's kinda like those classic drums heard in CLA's mixes - Green Day, etc... Nice and roomy with a lot of punch and snap on the Snare.

AFJ and EJB required, though I have only used the latter (EJB) for the ride which could be replaced with one from another pack and processed accordingly.

Note: For flams (and a tighter feel in general), I'd turn down the Rm Comp channel, turn down the send amount to the Room in the KPI for the Snare, and tighten it up a bit with the damping controls.

Hope you enjoy it!! Comments welcome.

Ashley,

Excellent job on that last CLA inspired preset! Really good stuff there.

The Hysteria preset was also good, but a full blown kit version of that would really put it over the top.

Cheers Funky :D

I've some spare time the next few days so will look into the Hysteria preset a little more and post. I'm gonna have a bash at recording some stuff with the CLA preset, I love it too

I had a mess about with the CLA based preset today - copied the EQ and Comp settings to an SSL EQ and 1176 plugin in PT - bypassing those in BFD2.

You can check out a short demo track on my new band's soundclick...

Let me know what ya think.

Enjoy!!

Here's a clean but punchy EJB preset that would probably be good for modern rock.
