BFDLAC 24 to 16 bit conversion distorts files

To decrease overhead (load times and disk space) I've converted all of my WAV and BFDLAC files to 16bit BFDLAC files (Into a new folder on a new drive, leaving old files untouched).
After relinking to the new 16bit files, any preset loaded into BFD3 plays back completely distorted (and very loud).
Anyone have an idea about what would cause this?
Going back to the original (24bit) data works fine.
Tried all the usual tricks (restarts, sample rate switches, etc...)
